Asphalt shingles are oil + stone, glued.
A standard asphalt shingle is a fiberglass mat soaked in oxidized petroleum asphalt, with ceramic granules pressed into the surface. The oil holds the granules in place and gives the shingle its flexibility.

UV bakes the oil out.
Over 8 to 12 years, ultraviolet light, heat cycles, and rain pull the oil out of the asphalt. The shingle loses pliability, edges curl, and granules start shedding into the gutter.

Once granules go, the clock starts.
Granules are the shingle's sunscreen. When they wash off, the asphalt underneath gets hit directly and ages 5x faster. A roof with heavy granule loss has roughly 3 to 5 years left.

Tall oil, not soy.
Tall oil comes from the resin and fatty acids inside pine wood, extracted as a byproduct of paper pulping. The supply chain reuses what would otherwise be a mill waste stream. The name "tall" is Swedish for pine, not a height descriptor. Pine produces an unusual concentration of natural polymers, rosin acids, lignin, and terpenes, which is exactly the chemistry an oxidized asphalt shingle needs to reabsorb to recover flexibility.
